Elkader Register, Thur., 20 Dec. 1923.
When the members of the Henry Wacker family returned to their home from the morning services at the Evangelical church Sunday, they found the lifeless body of Mrs. Emelia Koester, who made her home with them, in the bath tub.
Mrs. Koester had evidently filled the tub with water and gotten into it. Whether her death came from the shock of cold water or from drowning may never be known as the medical examination showed but little water in her lungs.
After the death of her husband which occurred July 22, 1923, at Mederville, Mrs. Koester went to Milwaukee to live with her son; she remained there a short time and came to Elkader where she made her home with Mr. and Mrs. Henry Wacker and family where she received the best of care.
As the result of a fall Mr. Koester was partially paralyzed for years, his trouble growing gradually worse until he was practically helpless the last three years of his life. During all these years Mrs. Koester helped him with his work as station agent for the C.M. & St. P. at Mederville and as his ailment grew worse became his most devoted nurse until the end.
Emelia Hagen was born at Osborne, Iowa, February 20, 1863, and had reached the age of 60 years, 9 months and 26 days. She was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Hagen.
On May 28, 1881, she was united in marriage to Theodore Koester at Osborne and to this union one son, Elmer, was born. He now resides at Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
She is survived by her son Elmer, one grandchild and two sisters, Verna and Mathilda, who resides at Minneapolis, other distant relatives and many friends.
Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock at the Wacker home here and the remains were taken to Mederville, where Mrs. Koester was laid to rest by the side of her husband. Rev. J. W. Warner of the Congregational church officiating.
