Guttenberg- Virgil Hugo "Bud" Kann, 81, of Solana Beach, Calif., formerly of Guttenberg, died Saturday, May 3, 2003, in Encinitas Scripps Hospital, Encinitas, Calif. Services: 10 a.m. Saturday, St. Mary's Catholic Church, Guttenberg, by the Rev. Marvin Bries. Burial: Kann-St. Michael Cemetery, rural Guttenberg. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Tuecke-Allyn Funeral Home and Cremation Service.
He was born, the son of the late Gregory and Anna Miller Kann, on Nov. 21, 1921, on the family farm near Guttenberg. Kann was a retired farmer. On Sept. 9, 1953, Virgil was united in Marriage with Lydia Maria Hammer at Holy Family Church in Berlin, Germany.
Survivors include his wife, Lydia; two daughters, Barbara Kann of Lynnwood, Wash., and Rebecca (Randy) Adams of Garnavillo; four sons, Peter (Joyce) Kann of Garnavillo, Roy (Donna) Kann of Guttenberg, Paul Kann of Chicago, Ill., and Andy (Barbara) Kann of Escondido, Calif.; 13 grandchildren; a great-grandson, Jameson; a sister, Jeanette Berns of Guttenberg; three brothers, Fred W. (Rose Mary) Kann, Donald (Helen) Kann and Owen Kann, all of Guttenberg; a sister-in-law, Betty Kann of Iowa City; and many other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Arlene St. John; a brother, Duane; a sister-in-law, Gerry Kann; and two brothers-in-law, Raymond St. John and Wilfred Berns.
