Otto W. Pape, son of Henry and Sophia Gewecke Pape, was born at Waverly, Iowa, August 24, 1895. He was baptized at St Paul's Lutheran Church, Waverly, September 22, 1895. He was reared on a farm near Readlyn. On April 4, 1909, he was confirmed at St. Matthew's Lutheran Church, Readlyn. He attended the rural school, and the German confirmation school.
On September 21, 1916, he was married to Hulda Peters at the same church, St. Matthews, Readlyn.
After his marriage, he worked in a hardware store at Waverly, for a few years; then moved to Readlyn where he was in the hardware business with his brothers until 1926. At this time he moved to Monona to go into the hardware business here with his brothers. He then went into the pump and well service, at which business he worked 22 years, until he retired 2 1/2 years ago. He passed away at the Elkader Samaritan Home on October 22, 1964. He had suffered ill health for two years. He attained the age of 69 years, one month, and 28 days.
He joined St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Monona, in May, 1927, and was a member there at his death. He also served on the church council, and is a past member of the Brotherhood. He was also a member of thee Monona Fire Department, being chief for some time.
Surviving are his widow; four daughters, Mrs. Melvin (Dorothy) Radloff, Luana, Mrs. James (Marjorie) Markey, Alexandria, Virginia, Mrs. Lorenz (Emelyn) Lenth, Jr., Luana, Mrs. Robert (Carol) Schilling, Cedar Rapids; one son, Merwyn Pape, Sunnyvale, California; two brothers, Henry of Waverly and Hugo of Vallejo, California; three sisters, Mrs. John (Emma) Meier, Readlyn, Mrs. Henry (Mary) Stick, Omaha, Nebraska, Mrs. Ernest (Ida) Moeller, Waterloo; and 18 grandchildren.
Preceding him in death were three brothers, one sister, and his parents.
Funeral services were conducted from St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Monona, by Rev. Arthur G. Baalson and Luther A. Meyer. Burial was in St. Paul Lutheran Church Cemetery, Monona.
