Three lose lives in one vehicle accident.
A one vehicle accident occurred Friday, Sept. 24, at about 4:04 a.m., three tenths of a mile northwest of Marquette on county road B-45. The 1977 Monte Carlo was traveling at a high rate of speed and hit a rock embankment. The vehicle rolled over onto the road and came to rest on its top.
Three passengers died as a result of the accident. Cheryl Barker, 23, Monona, was dead at the scene. James Johnson, 33, Monona, died enroute to the hospital and a third victim, Donnie Scheffert, 33, Monona, died the next day at 6:24 a.m. at LaCrosse Lutheran Hospital. Pauline Dettmann, 25, Monona, also a passenger was taken to Prairie du Chien Memorial Hospital and transferred to LaCrosse. Darla Schlitter, 19, Luana, was taken to Prairie du Chien Memorial Hospital. The driver, Dennis Wagner, 23, Monona, was treated and released at Prairie du Chien Memorial Hospital.
The Clayton County Sheriff's Department, Iowa Highway Patrol officials, the Marquette and McGregor police were at the scene. Wagner was charged with O.W.I. The case is still under investigation.

An article notes the Iowa Supreme Court upheld the conviction of Dennis Paul Wagner, using blood sample testing obtained at the Prairie du Chien, Wis., hospital. The test revealed Mr. Wagner had a blood alcohol content of .225 of a percent. Iowa law at the time of the accident had a legal intoxication limit of .13 of a percent.
