The people of Postville were horrified this morning to hear that Herbert David, a former resident of this city, had been instantly killed in a railroad collision in the Calmar yards at 3:30 a.m.

(First three lines of the next paragraph were to blurred to transcribe.) on the east side, where the switch engine was struck by a fast freight and reduced to junk in the twinkling of an eye, Herbert being buried for several hours beneath the wreckage of his engine before his lifeless form was removed badly burned and bruised. His engineer jumped and was little injured, while the freight engineer was badly bruised in the back, and some of the trainmen suffered broken legs and arms. It was Herbert's first night on the job.

Herbert had for the past two years worked at his trade of carpenter with Otto Sander of this city, and but a few months ago entered railroad service as a locomotive fireman at Mason City, being transferred to the Calmar yards in that capacity but yesterday.

He was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred David of near Monona, former residents of this locality, and was about 30 years of age. He was an honest, honorable, upright young man of genial disposition, and numbered his friends by his acquaintances. He was a member of the Masonic fraternity of Postville.

Alfred David, a brother of Herbert's, took the train here for Calmar this morning after the body. Otto Sander, A. C. Webster and H. D. Webb of the Masonic fraternity accompanying him.

The sympathy of all goes out to the sorrowing family in their sad and sudden bereavement.
