ALTA MAY (MALLORY) SMITH 1867-1957

Mrs. Alta May Smith, daughter of August and Rose (Knee) Mallory was born October 21, 1867, at Colesburg, Iowa and died November 19, 1957 at the hospital at Prairie du Chien, Wis. at the age of 90 years and 28 days.

Mrs. Smith attended school at Colesburg and the Mound School in Mallory Township.

She was united in marriage to Rueben F. Smith on July 31, 1889. They made their home on a farm in Elk Township, until his death in 1924. Mrs. Smith continued to live on the farm with her son Frank until 1947 when they moved into Garber, where she lived until Frank's death in 1954. Since that time she made her home with her children.

She is prceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Sam Mallory and Horace Mallory and a sister, Mrs. Walter "Bessie" Lee.

Survivors include son Carter of Garber, Iowa; two daughters, Mrs. John L. (Gertrude) Costigan of Elkader and Mrs. Edward (Leta) Waterman of Guttenberg; two sisters, Mrs. Katie Palmer of Spring Valley, Wis. and Leta Brown of Colesburg, Iowa.

Burial was in Mt. Harmony Cemetery, near Elkport.

Garber, Ia. -- Services for Mrs. Alta Smith, 90, Garber, who died Tuesday at Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin, will be at 2 p.m. Friday from St. John Evangelical and Reformed Church, with burial in Mount Harmony Cemetery, near Elkport. Witt Funeral Home in charge. Mrs. Smith, nee Mallory, who was born in 1867 at Colesburg, leaves a son Carter, Garber; 2 daughters, Mrs. John Costigan, Elkader and Mrs. Edward Waterman, Guttenberg and 2 sisters, Mrs. Kate Palmer, Spring Valley, Wisconsin and Mrs. Leta Brown, Colesburg, Iowa.
