Elkader- Arthur J. Johnson, 84, chairman of the board of Central State Bank in Elkader and president of Fidelity Investment Co., died Tuesday at Central Community Hospital in Elkader. He had been in banking 60 years and was also an officer with Johnson Insurance Agency.
Born Dec. 9, 1898, in Wagner township, Clayton County, he married Donna Humphrey in 1935 in Elkader. He was with the St. Olaf Savings Bank in St. Olaf from 1922-29 when he moved to Elkader. He was a former member of the board of directors of the Northeast Iowa Boy Scout Council, commander of both the Elkader and St. Olaf American Legion posts, past president of the Rotary Club in Elkader and past president of the national Holstein Friesian Association of America. In 1954 he was elected a State Senator and served the 55th and 56th General Assemblies. He was chairman of the Clayton County Republican Party for 24 years.
Survivors are his wife; two sons, James and Alan, both of Elkader; four sisters, Mrs. Irene Anderson, Ruth Johnson and Frances Johnson, all of Minneapolis, and Mrs. Helen Olson of Strawberry Point; and three grandchildren.
Services: Thursday, 11 a.m. Norway Lutheran Church, rural St. Olaf. Friends may call after 2 p.m. today at Witt's. Burial St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery.
