Cedar Rapids Gazette, Sunday, 22 Oct. 1995. (Condensed from a longer obit.).

Elkader- Barbara Marie Donlon Rhomberg, daughter of John "Jack" Donlon and Monica Theisen Donlon, was born in Elkader, Iowa, on Sept. 3, 1936. Barb attended St. Joseph's grade school and graduated from Elkader High School in 1954.

After high school Barb began pursuing her lifelong dream of becoming a nurse by attending St. Teresa's College in Winona, Minn., for two and a half years. She loved nursing, but at the time, it was not as important as the man who proposed marriage to her. She knew her dream would wait.

On Aug. 25, 1956, she married Joe A. Rhomberg of Dubuque. This beautiful marriage produced eight children and a family filled with love. Barb's family always came first for her, and amazingly, she always seemed to have strength, energy and love to spare.

However, Barb never gave up on her dream. She worked as an office nurse for Dr. A. R. Powell, and in 1980 she attended Northeast Iowa Technical, in Calmar, Iowa, receiving her degree as Registered Nurse in June of 1981. She began practicing her work at Central Community Hospital and then Elkader Medical Associates, where she worked for ten years.

Barb was also an active and valuable community member. She was a member of local Questers and Proteus Clubs, and she and her husband cherished their involvement with the Bridge Club. She was also intricately involved with the Catholic Church's education of it's young, serving on many boards and committees.

At the age of 59, Barb died of cancer in her Elkader home on Friday afternoon, Oct. 20, 1995, surrounded by the love of her family.

Barb is survived by her husband, Joe; two sons, Joe of Volga, and John of Elkader; six daughters, Jeannie Hupp of Peoria, Ill., Mary Lawler of Des Moines, Patricia Simpson of Eagan, Minn., Monica Keleher of Lisbon, Kathleen Rhomberg of Milwaukee, and Susan Rhomberg of Elkader; her mother, Monica Donlon; and 13 grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her father, John B. Donlon.

Services: 11 a.m. Monday, St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Elkader. Burial: church cemetery. Arrangements by Leonard Funeral Home, Elkader.
