Upper Des Moines Republican, Algona, Iowa, Wed., 24 Feb. 1915. (Condensed).

John Backus, father of Editor Sid. J. Backus of this paper, died at his home in Clayton, Iowa, Monday afternoon, after an illness of 3 months. He had a stroke of apoplexy Nov. 30 last and his life had hung by a thread since that time. He had been given loving attendance by his aged wife, two daughters and one son his last days. The children besides Editor Backus are Mrs. J. H. Becker of Des Moines, and Mrs. J. Swesey of Beach, N.D.

John Backus was born in Milfeldt, Prussia, 31 Aug. 1844; came to America with his parents in 1853 and lived in Cincinnati one year before settling in Clayton county in 1854, where they have since lived with the exception of a few years at various places.
