Elkader, Ia. - Funeral services for Vellas L. Gilje, 81, former postmaster here, who died suddenly at his home Tuesday morning, were held from the Witt Funeral chapel Thursday afternoon, with the Rev. George Richter, pastor of the Congregational Christian church, Elkader, and the Rev. G.K. Mykland, of the Zion Lutheran church, at Clayton Center, officiating. The Rev. S.J. Strandjord, pastor, officiated at services at the Norway church. Burial was in Norway cemetery.
Mr. Gilje was postmaster here for 20 years, and served under five presidents. He was also in the clothing and mercantile business for many years.
Surviving, besides his wife, are two sons, Commander Louis E. Gilje, of the medical corps in the United States navy, and Capt. Lorimer A. Gilje, stationed in Washington, D.C.; one daughter, Mrs. Vernice Loufek, Cedar Rapids, Ia.; and two grandchildren.
