Carl Staack, 64, of Elkader, was instantly killed about 2:30 p.m. Saturday when a Caterpillar road grader driven by William Crane, Sr., 55, of Elkader, plunged down a 20-foot embankment after losing its footing and crushed both men beneath it, just outside Littleport.
Crane was rushed to Mercy hospital in Dubuque where he is still in serious condition. He is a county road maintenance man.
Cause of Staack's death was a fractured skull.
Staack is survived by his wife and a daughter, Jolene.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Witte funeral chapel, and at 2:00 p.m. at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, with the Rev. H. H. Frohn, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Eastside Cemetery.
