Eugene Christopher Connor, born Oct. 16, 1927, in Elkader, Iowa, died on Sunday, Nov. 21, 1999, at the Prairie du Chien Memorial Hospital, surrounded by his family. Gene Conner passed peacefully at 2:36 p.m. after a long battle with cancer.
Gene was married to Shirley Ann Hoefer on Jan. 26, 1955, at St. Joseph's Church in Garnavillo, Iowa. Gene worked the family farm until 1959. Following a series of challenges, he worked in the agri-services industry until 1968. In 1969, Gene started his own excavating company, which he ran until 1979. His last years were spent working in his shop in Froelich and helping his children with many building projects.
He is survived by his wife, Shirley of Froelich; eight sons and daughters: Paul and Linda of Galena, Ill., Patrick of Bettendorf, Patricia of Froelich, Steve and Virg of De Witt, Darlene and Roger Simon of Farley, Joe and Peg of Farmersburg, Lisa and Tim Donlon of Monona and Milo and Donna of Prairie du Chien; and 21 grandchildren.
He also leaves behind four sisters, Rachel Engelhardt of Elkader, Eileen and Erwin Ruff of McGregor, Roni and Keith Reisen of Dubuque and Marilyn and John Ryan of Monona.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Lester and Ronilla Schoulte Connor; and an infant daughter, Mary Kay Connor.
Mass of Resurrection: 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 24, 1999, St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Monona. Friends may call from 3 to 9 p.m. today at Leonard Funeral Home, Elkader, where a Scripture service begins at 4:30 p.m. Interment: St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery, Elkader. The Rev. Michael Tauke and the Rev. Daniel Keppler will officiate.
