Grant Fischer Passes Away
Grant Lavern Fischer was born May 13, 1918, at Clayton, Iowa. The son of William D. and Ludelia (Thoma) Fischer, was baptized July 14, 1918, by Pastor J. Janzig, and confirmed at Peace Lutheran Church, Clayton, June 4, 1933, by Pastor Zielinger.
He attended rural school at Clayton, and was a graduate of Garnavillo High School in 1935 and also attended Iowa State Teacher's College at Cedar Falls (now U. N. I.). He also received an Honorable Discharge from the U. S. Navy in 1939.
On March 9, 1941, he was married to Oceania Eylers by Rev. Wm. Goetz at Guttenberg. They farmed until 1960, when they moved to Garnavillo, Ia. He was a rural submail carrier for Garnavillo Post Office for 25 years and a school bus driver for Garnavillo Comm. Schools for 18 years. He enjoyed traveling and visiting and eating out and playing accordion for his own enjoyment. Three children were born, Robert, Ruth and Sharon. The couple observed their 50th wedding anniversary March 9, 1991.
Survivors are his wife, Oceania; son, Robert and his wife Judy; daughter, Ruth and her husband Dennis James, and Sharon and her husband, Vernon Henning; 8 grandchildren, Kristine Carrier, Kimberly & Kevin James, William, Mark & Matthew Fischer, and Diane & Brian Henning; 2 great grandsons, Anthony & Jonathan Carrier; one sister, Ina Roloff, and one brother, Earl of Garnavillo.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one infant grandson, and two brothers, Forrest and Lyle.
He died Friday, October 2, 1992, at the Guttenberg Municipal Hospital following a brief illness.
Funeral services were held Monday, October 5, 1992, 10:30 a.m. at St. Peter Lutheran Church, Garnavillo, Ia. Pastor Tom Jones officiated. Burial was in the Garnavillo City Cemetery. Casket bearers were William Fischer, Mark Fischer, Matthew Fischer, Kevin James, Brian Henning, and Roger Carrier.
