Elkport, Ia., Aug 14 - This community was shocked Thursday morning when it was learned that Mrs. Wm. Freitag had died at her home last Wednesday night.
Mrs. Freitag suffered a stroke of paralysis about two months ago, while visiting her daughter, Mrs. Wm. Carpenter, at Mason City, and was brought home when she showed signs of recovery. However, last Sunday, a week ago, she suffered another stroke and grew gradually weaker until death relieved her. Rev. Braun of Garnavillo was called and administered the last rites before she died.
Mrs. Freitag was a good woman, a good wife and mother and will be sadly missed. She was a member of the Elkport Frauen Verein, the members of which attended the funeral in a body and rendered several selections at the services at the home.
Mrs. Wm. Freitag was born in Garnavillo township on the 28th day of April, 1867, and was married to Wm. Freitag, who survives her, in the year 1889. To the happy union nine children were born, eight of whom survive: Mrs. Martha Wittman of Olivia, Minn.; Mrs. Wm. Carpenter of Mason City, Ia.; Mrs. Malinda Zittergreen of Garber, Ia.; Wm. Freitag, Jr., Elsie, Marie, Ida and Glenden, at home.
Funeral services were held at the home and from there the remains were taken to the St. Paul church at Garnavillo, where Rev. Braun delivered a splendid sermon, both in German and English. The Garnavillo choir rendered several selections. Interment was at the Garnavillo cemetery. The funeral was largely attended, as the departed had a hose of friends.
