Alexander Blake, son of Alexander and Margaret Blake, was born in St. Joseph County, Indiana on June 30th, 1832.

In 1851 Mr. Blake moved to Iowa and settled in Cass Township, Clayton County, Iowa where he has since resided.

On August 2nd, 1855 he was married to Miss Fannie E. Campbell. To this union two children were born, a daughter Henrietta who died in infancy and a son Charles S. Blake, now residing in Wheatley, Arkansas.

Mrs. Fannie Blake died March 10th, 1863. In February, 1864 he was married to Miss Elizabeth Wilder. To them one child was born, Mrs. Nellie King now residing in Wenatchee, Washington.

Mrs. Elizabeth Blake died March 1, 1894. On Mar. 19, 1898 he was married to Miss Jennie Speed who survives him. Mr. Blake taught the first school in Cass Township in the fall of 1851. For many years Mr. Blake was in active business in Strawberry Point. For nearly thirty years he was engaged in the hotel business, most of the time on the site now occupied by the Franklin Hotel. The Blake House was recognized as one of the good, well conducted hotels of northeastern Iowa.

Mr. Blake has been in impaired health for a number of years. He was by nature a kind-hearted, genial man. In the early part of his life he took an active interest in public and social affairs of the community and was called upon to fill numerous positions of trust and responsibility. He courageously met all trials and privations incident to pioneer life. Nothing gave him greater pleasure than to recall the early incidents, traditions and history of Cass and adjoining townships for with sixty-three years continuous residence here he could speak with authority.

On Friday morning, Jan. 23rd, 1914 after a lingering illness he died at his residence in Strawberry Point, aged eighty-one years, six months and twenty-four days.

Funeral services occurred at the home Monday forenoon conducted by Rev. L. A. Bradford, of the M. E. Church. The remains were laid to rest in our local cemetery.
