Guttenberg, Ia. - Funeral services were held in St. Mary's Church here for Michael Hess, 80, who died April 24 after a lingering illness. Burial was in St. Joseph's Cemetery at Farley.
Pallbearers were six grandsons, Cyril, James, Donald, Gerald and Robert Hess, and William Beastrom.
Mr. Hess was born at Luxemburg on April 11, 1863, and he formerly lived in Dyersville and Farley. The past 20 years he made his home in Guttenberg. He was married to Margaret Heider, who died in 1901.
Surviving are seven children: Frank, of Farley; Otto, of Worthington; Hubert, of Stockton, Ill.; Mrs. Madeline Hemmer, of Dyersville; Mrs. Hubert Zapf, of Ryan; Mrs. Greg Bonfig, of New Hampton and Mrs. Ed Beastrom, of Cedar Rapids.
In 1902 he married Ann Wilgenbusch, who survives with four sons, Arnold, of Delhi; Henry and Ray, both of Worthington, and Irvin, of Guttenberg; one brother, Charles, of Los Angeles; two sisters, Mrs. Teresa Lucas, of Luxemburg, and Mrs. Barbara Didier, of Grandville; 34 grandchildren, and eight great grandchildren.
Mr. Hess was preceded in death by four sons, three brothers and two sisters.
