Susanna Killinger was born in Stark County, Ohio, March 14, 1826, and died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. S.A. Cooley, at Elgin, February 19, 1909, aged 82 years 11 months and 5 days.

In 1845 she was married to William Patterson. Shortly after, they came to Iowa and took up a claim in Clayton County.

To them were born twelve children, of whom only five survive, Mrs. Rosalia Conner, of Platte, S.D.; Mrs. Sarah Ann Cooley of Elgin; Mrs. Australia Shoemaker; Will Patterson of Clayton County and Mrs. Josephine Wonser of Tama, Iowa.

Her husband preceded her to the eternal world six years [ago]. during the last four years of her life she has been tenderly cared for in the home of her daughter, Mrs. S.A. Cooley.

Born of devout Christian parents, she became an earnest christian early in life and enjoyed the blessings and comforts of the gospel through a long life of faithful service to her family, her friends and all who came within the sphere of her influence. "The message of the just is blessed."

The funeral services were held at her late home February 21st at 10 o'clock, conducted by the Rev. J.W. Baumgardner of West Union, Iowa, for many years an intimate friend of the family, who spoke briefly from the text I Cor., 13th Chapter, 9, 10 and 12 verses. Excellent music was funished by a choir composed of Hans Keiser, Herman Hackmann and the Misses Kate Bauman, Anna Reusser and Anna Muehlenthaler.

She was borne to her last resting place to lie beside her husband in the Patterson cemetery which is on a corner of the old farm in Clayton County. There, her body, with those of husband, children and many relatives and friends, lies awaiting the resurrection of the just.
