John R. Patterson was born in Harrison county, Ohio, March 30, 1835, and peacefully passed away at the old homestead in Clayton county surrounded by his children and faithful companion, November 22, 1905, at the age of 70 years, 7 months and 28 days.

Mr. Patterson came to Iowa with his parents in 1851 and in 1858 was joined in wedlock to Catherine Christ and to them were born four children, one of whom is now living, C.E. Patterson, of Fayette. His first wife died February 14, 1863, and on June 15, 1865 he was married to Josephine C. Barnhouse and to them were born seven children, five of whom are living, Elver, of Elgin; Ira, of Urishville, Ohio; Mrs. Chas. Feller, of Wagner township; Mrs. R.W. Muehlenthaler, of Elgin; and Sadie at home.

Deceased leaves to mourn besides his wife and children, five brothers and three sisters, Wesley, of Wahpeton, North Dakota; Joseph of Brainard; Samuel, of Fayette; Aaron, of Carthage, South Dakota; Ezra, of West Union; Sarah J. Atwood, of Elkader; Martha Kees, of Harlan, Iowa and Catherine Thompson, of Ellendale, Minnesota.

December 16, 1899, Mr. Patterson and family moved from Wagner township to this city where they have made their home since. He was a man of high honor and greatly respected by his large circle of acquaintances. The many little deeds of kindness which he did in this life will live after him and be a fitting tribute to his memory.

The funeral services were held from the home in Wagner township, Rev. Stoeckmann officiating, and a choir composed of Hans Keiser, Carl Hackmann, Mrs. Stoeckmann and Miss Amelia Freiburghaus, beautifully sang the songs he loved most.

Interment was made in the Patterson cemetery where the mortal remains of our esteemed fellow townsman were laid to rest to await the resurrection morn.
