Deceased Name: Virginia A. Hefel

Mrs. Clarence J. "Dutch" (Virginia A.) Hefel, 84, of Bettendorf, Iowa, formerly of Dubuque and North Buena Vista, Iowa, died at 12:35 a.m. Monday, March 29, 2004, in Davenport, Iowa, following a short illness.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, North Buena Vista. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main St., Dubuque, where there will be a parish wake service at 3 p.m. Friends also may call after 9 a.m. Thursday at the Parish Center, North Buena Vista.

She was born on April 11, 1919, in Waterloo, Iowa, daughter of Gregor and Anna Mary (Wulfekuhl) Uriell.

She married Clarence J. "Dutch" Hefel Sr. on Jan. 23, 1946, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Guttenberg, Iowa; he preceded her in death on March 5, 1986. They farmed in the North Buena Vista area for more than 25 years. They sold the farm in 1973 and moved to Dubuque. In 1999, she moved to Bettendorf to be near her family.

She was a member of Immaculate Conception Parish and its Rosary Society in North Buena Vista.

Virginia especially loved being with her family and grandchildren. She also enjoyed playing euchre and bingo.

She will be remembered for the "tons" of cookies she baked.

Surviving are two sons, Gregory J. (Jane) Hefel, of Guttenberg, and Clarence J. "Nick" Jr. (Sandy) Hefel, of Bettendorf; four granddaughters, Malinda (Keith) Kramer, of Dyersville, Iowa, Nicole (Michael) Simmering, of Davenport, Sarah (fiance, Bert Langworthy) Hefel, of Tiffin, Iowa, and Erin (fiance, Todd Steffensmeier) Hefel, of Bettendorf; a great-grandson, Gregor Kramer; two sisters, LaVon Uriell, of Hiawatha, Iowa, and Kathleen (Harold) Robertson, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; a brother, John "Jack" (Bonnie) Uriell, of Waverly, Iowa; a sister-in-law, Bea Uriell, of San Diego; and nieces and nephews.

She also was preceded in death by two sisters, Geraldine Uriell and Dolores Uriell; and a brother, Harlan Uriell.

Memorials may be sent to Hospice of Dubuque, 2255 Kennedy Road, Dubuque, Iowa 52002.
