George John Schuchman was born May 27, 1871 in Sperry township, Clayton county, near St. Sebald. His parents were Mr. and Mrs. George Schuchman, who being members of the Lutheran church at St. Sebald, had their son baptized in infancy, and later sent him to a school of religious instruction, to be confirmed, which was done on March 29, 1885 in the St. Sebald church.

After staying with his parents for several years and helping them with their work on the farm, he was united in holy wedock, to Miss Ida N. Baumgartner on June 12, 1902 by the pastor of his church, Rev. H. Fueher. This union was blessed with nine children, four sons - Theodore, George, Werner and Marvin and five daughters - Ella, wife of John Kray; Amanda, now at Rochester, Minn. taking nurses training; Leta and Agnes at home. One daughter, Gertrude, preceded the father in death, June 27, 1925.

Mr. Schuchman and his wife made their first home on a farm in Sperry township, but after a period of two years moved to a farm in Cass township, where they have lived ever since.

Mr. Schuchman's health was not good for the past few years. Being very active and more or less nervous he was subject to attacks of weakness. Monday afternoon while helping his sons in the field and by fighting a fire, he over exerted himself, and before his sons were aware of his condition, he suffered from a hemhorrhage, which caused his death.

Mr. Schuchman attained the age of 59 years, 10 months and 16 days. He is survived by his wife, eight children, four grandchildren, two brothers, Fred of Strawberry Point and Marvin of Oelwein; three sisters, Mrs. Martin Breitauer of Heming, Minnesota, Mrs. Anna Schuchman of Oelwein and Mrs. John McDuffey of Dalton, Wisconsin.

Mr. Schuchman was a member of St. Sebald church, then later a member of the Lutheran church at Lamont, later becoming a member of Emanual's Lutheran church of Strawberry Point. He always showed a keen interest in the affairs of the church and was elected several times to the offices of trustee and collector, until ill health forced him to give up the work. He was also a school director in his district for many years. He leaves many friends who regret his departure and who extend sympathy to the bereaved family.

May our deceased brother rest in peace and may the Heavenly Father comfort and protect the widow and children, according to his promise, "I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee."

The pall bearers were his nephews, Fred Hock, John Hock Jr., Edwin Schuchman, Otto Schuchman, Paul Schuchman and Adolph Schuchman. Funeral services were conducted by the Rev. M.O. Jahr at Emanual's Lutheran church, Strawberry Point, Thursday afternoon, April 16, 1931. Interment was made in the Strawberry Point cemetery.

The large number at the funeral showed the high esteem held for the departed. While his life was short, he accomplished much good while on this earth. - Strawberry Point Press

~Notes: The obit in this paper was reprinted from an issue of Strawberry Point Press published a week or more earlier in April. Because the funeral had been held on April 16th, it appears that DOD would have been Monday, April 13. Researchers should confirm that date.
