Elgin Echo, Thursday, 4 July 1918. From the Monona Leader, undated.

The first Clayton County soldier to be killed in France was reported on Tuesday of last week. He was Leslie H. Smith of Monona, and it is understood that he enlisted in the Marine Corps last year. He was a son of Horace H. Smith and has a brother in the same machine gun company.-Monona Leader.
