Austin Ames

Funeral services were held on May 11, 1978 at the Schultz Funeral Home in Monona for Austin Davis Ames, who died at LaCrosse Lutheran Hospital on May 8, 1978 at the age of 80 years.

Pastor Charles Ager officiated at the service and interment was in the Monona City Cemetery.

Pallbearers were grandsons: Ronnie Protsman, James Moon, Rick Benhart, Randy Moon, Robert Bennett, Allen Heins, Calvin Ames, Rodney Benhart, Dennis Ames, and Norbert Protsman, Jr.

Austin Ames, son of Absalom and Mary Shield Ames was born Jan. 26, 1898 at Retreat, Wis. and came to Iowa at the age of two years with his family to a farm north of Luana, where he spent his early life. On Jan. 28, 1925, he was united in marriage to Helen Huffman. To this union ten children were born - Mrs. Doyla (Audrey) Bennett of Hawkeye, Ia., Mrs. Don (Darlene) Moon of Luana, Mrs. Norbert (Donna) Protsman of New Albin, Mrs. Marvin (Bonnie) Hines of Oelwein, Mrs. Henry (Diana) Benhart of Oelwein, Mrs. Robert (Marilyn) Havlik of Cedar Rapids, Mrs. Gary (Meredieth) Gentes of Prairie du Chien, Wis., Calvin Ames of Waterloo, Clayton and David Ames of Janesville, Wis.

Austin lived his entire life in northeast Iowa, working at many jobs. At the time of his death, he was living at the Great River Care Center in McGregor.

He was preceded in death by his wife, his parents, five brothers, and two sisters.

He is survived by his ten children, thirty grandchildren, and twenty great-grandchildren, three sisters - Mrs. Tresa Koth and Mrs. Alice Dull of Monona, and Mrs. Iva Snitker of Waukon, and one brother, Miles of Castalia.
