Elgin Echo, Thur., 2 Dec. 1909. (condensed from a column long accounting of his death by accidental self-inflicted gunshot wound.).
Wednesday evening of last week just as everyone was preparing for Thanksgiving day a telephone message came from St. Olaf which stated that George Meyer had accidentally shot himself and had bled to death while being taken to St. Olaf for medical assistance.
Mr. Meyer had traveled by buggy to Elkader and on the return trip spotted a rabbit. He climbed out of the buggy and in trying to remove his gun from under the seat to shoot the rabbit the hammer of the weapon caught and the weapon discharged, sending its shot into his arm and severing the main artery. John Barfus, who was employed by Mr. Meyer and was traveling with him on the trip, drove him to St. Olaf with all haste but Mr. Meyer died before medical assistance could be obtained.
George Meyer was a young man, being 27 years and 20 days of age at the time of his death. He was born at the farm where he was conducting an extensive farming business and was considered one of the progressive men of the country and his sudden death is greatly deplored by the many who knew him both in this vicinity and elsewhere. He is survived by a wife and three children, his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Chris Meyer of Elgin, one brother, Earnest, and three sisters, Mrs. Joe Baumgartner, Mrs. Olaf Haug and Miss Lena Meyer.
Funeral services were held from the Apostolic church east of town Sunday afternoon and interment made in the cemetery there.

NOTE: WPA records show George Meyer 1882 - 1919 as buried in the Dunkard cemetery, Marion township. The year of death in this record is probably an error and should be 1909 as the date of the newspaper is clear. 1882 - 1909 would make this George Meyer 27 years old at death, matching the age given for George Meyer in this article. More research is needed.
