Elgin Echo, Thursday, 08 November 1906.

At Rest.

Hans Skarshoug.

He was born January 28, 1840, in Wisconsin, and died October 31, 1906, of general tuberculosis.

At the age of four years he came to Clayton county with his parents and has lived on the same farm ever since. His parents were pioneers and when they came here they found the country as nature had made it and plentifully inhabited by Indians. He being the only child it devolved upon him to care for them in declining years and this duty he faithfully performed and after their death he continued to occupy the home.

In 1867 he was married to Joran(last letter of name is missing) Simpson and eight children were born to them, four boys and four girls. Three of these preceded him to the grave as did his wife, she dying August 28, 1883. The children remaining are Mrs. Halste(last letter of name is missing) Groth, Mrs. Andrew Reinhart and Mr. H. O. Skarshoug, of Elgin, and Mrs. I. H. Skarshoug and Mrs. John Jacobs, of Gunder.

He had been in ill health for many years prior to his death and had been cared for by his son, Henry, who now occupies the old home place. His death occurred last Wednesday and the funeral was held Saturday from the Clermont Norwegian Lutheran church, Rev. Burcett having charge of the services. A large number of his relatives and friends followed the remains to their last resting place, this being the last act through which they could show their respect.
