Knoke, Ella Friedricke Sophia (Glawe) - 1897-1955

Ella Sophia Knoke, daughter of Henry Glawe and his wife Wilhelmina Schroeder, was born September 2, 1897, at Clayton Center, Iowa, and died in a hospital at Belmond, Iowa, Feb. 3, 1955, at the age of fifty-seven years, five months and one day.

Mrs. Knoke had not been in good health for several years, but when she left Elkader a week ago to visit relatives in Klemme, Iowa and surrounding neighborhood, no one expected to receive the news we did last Thursday. The immediate cause of her death was a cerebral hemorrhage.

With the exception of thirteen years which she spent in Hancock county, Iowa, Mrs. Knoke lived her entire life in Clayton County. Since 1927, a resident of Elkader. The past few years she has made her home with her daughter and son-in-law, the Melvin Webbers. The deceased was united in marriage on April 29, 1914, to Fred Knoke at Clayton Center. Mr. Knoke died Dec. 30, 1932, at which time the oldest child, Harold being seventeen years of age.

Eight children survive their mother. They are: Harold, Elkader; Mrs. Charles (Helen) Taylor, Elkader; Kenneth, Davenport; Mrs. Warren (Lorraine) Meyer, Chicago, IL; Mrs. Melvin (Ivanell) Webber, Elkader; Mrs. Elmer (Marion) Zittergruen, Guttenberg; Vernon at home, and Sgt. Fred Knoke with the U. S. Army in Korea. He is now on the ocean and will dock Feb. 13. One son died at age three.

Mrs. Knoke was an active member of the Peace Evangelical and Reformed Church and the Women's Guild. She was baptized and confirmed in the Clayton Center church.

Survivors besides her children include: ten grandchildren, four brothers and two sisters, Albert Glawe of St. Olaf, John of Littleport, Henry of Britt, Iowa, Charlie of Elkader, Mrs. Minnie Lahrs and Mrs. Caroline Seeland, both of Elkader.
