Monona, Ia. - Merle Sheppard, 42, of Luana, died early Friday in the veterans' hospital in Des Moines as the result of injuries received in an automobile accident near here Oct. 24, in which his brother, Leigh Sheppard, was killed.

Merle's injuries at first were not believed serious, but he failed to respond to treatment at the Postville hospital and Monday was removed to the veterans' hospital.

He is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Eli Sheppard, Luana; a sister Mrs. Henry Kamaus, West Union, Ia.; and a brother, Lyle, Galesburg, Ill. Funeral arrangements have not been completed.

Luana, Ia. - Military funeral services for Merle R. Sheppard, 41, who died Friday as the result of injuries received in an automobile accident on Oct. 24, were held from the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Eli Sheppard, Wagner township, to the Norway Lutheran church Monday afternoon. Dr. S.J. Strandjord, pastor, officiated, and burial was in the United Brethren cemetery in Wagner township. The St. Olaf post of the American Legion was in charge of the military rites. Mr. Sheppard's brother, Leigh, was killed in the accident which occurred on the Farmersburg-Monona road.

Merle was born in Wagner township on Nov. 13, 1903. He farmed near West Union, Ia., for seven years, and later went to Winthrop, Minn., where he was employed. Inducted into the army on Oct. 8, 1942, he was sent overseas as a military police, and later was returned to the United States as a guard of prisoners of war. He also served as a guard in various camps, and wore the European-African, and Middle Eastern campaign ribbons. He was discharged Aug. 16, 1945.

Surviving are his parents; a sister, Mrs. Henry (Grace) Kamaus, West Union; and a brother, Lyle, Galesburg, Ill.
