Elkader, Ia. - Wolfgang Schmidt, 61, former Elkader resident, died in a hospital in El Monte, Calif., Monday, according to word received here by relatives. He suffered a stroke the preceding Tuesday.

Mr. Schmidt was born in Elkader, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Wolfgang Schmidt, Sr. When a young man, he left Elkader to go to Norfolk, Neb., where he engaged in the printing business and became owner and editor of "The Messenger". He retired to California two years ago.

He is survived by his wife; two adopted daughters; two brothers, Fred Schmidt, Elkader and William Schmidt, Lake Port, Calif.; and two sisters, Miss Carolyn Schmidt and Mrs. Amelia Soll, both of Elkader.
