LADY BURNED TO DEATH BY EXPLOSION OF LARD.
A sad accident occurred last Friday morning that resulted in the death of Mrs. Frank Liddy of this place, says the Elkader Register. Thursday Mrs. Liddy had been rendering lard and a kettle with some of it in was left in the oven of the range. Friday morning Mr. Liddy built a brisk fire in the range, the lard being forgotten until the odor of it started an investigation. When Mrs. Liddy opened the oven door there was virtually an explosion and the flaming lard flew all over the room. Mrs. Liddy was severely burned, but received worse burns when she saw her little granddaughter in danger of the flames and she rushed through them to rescue the child. Mr. and Mrs. Liddy, with some assistance, put out the fire before it had spread outside of the room, but the kitchen was considerably damaged and Mr. Liddy received some painful burns. As soon as possible medical aid was summoned and Mrs. Liddy's burns cared for. At first it was not tho't that they would prove fatal but they must have been deeper than was realized for she passed away on Sunday, Dec. 9th, at noon.
