Services for Sophia Montour:

Funeral services for Sophia Montour were held Thursday, April 30, 1992at 11:00 a.m., at the Garden City United Methodist Church, Monona, Iowa. Rev. Gary Dobbins officiated. Organist was Rick Benzing. Pallberarers were Vernis Henkes, Robert Suddendorf, Maloy Johanningmeier, Wylo Wagner, Luther Heins and Willis Johnanningmeier. Honorary pallbearers were: Wesley Wiedenmann, Lester Gruel, Calvin Henkes, Alton Henkes, Eugene Suddendorf, Carl Johanningmeier, and Telmer Olson. Burial was in the Monona City Cemetery. Schultz’s Funeral Home of Monona was in charge of the services.

Sophia Caroline Montour was born February 13, 1893 at Postville, Iowa, to George and Caroline (Nise) Wagner. She was baptized at Monona, Iowa on July 8, 1894 by Rev. J.Appel (Lutheran pastor). She received her education in a rural school in Monona Township.

Sophia was united in marriage to Edward L. Montour on January 22, 1913, at her parents home by Rev. Gleason (Evangelical minister). To this union four sons were born, Floyd, Harvey, Edward and Donald.

They farmed for six years in Wagner township until they bought and moved to a farm in Monona township until they retired to Monona in 1952. Sophia was a member of the Garden City United Methodist Church, United Women and Senior Citizens.

Sophia died Monday, April 27, 1992 at the Great River Care Center, McGregor, Iowa. She had reached the age of 99 years, 2 months and 14 days.

Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, Edward L., who died June 6, 1960; two sons, Floyd and Edward R.; four sisters , Louise Henkes, Katie Wagner, Johanna Johanningmeier, and Marie Huckstadt; two brothers, George Wagner and Louis Wagner; and an infant grandson, Douglas Montour.

Survivors include two sons, Harvey Montour and his wife, Imogene of Monona, and Donald Montour and his wife, Joyce, of McGregor; three grandsons, Dean, Steve and Greg; one granddaughter, Phyllis Montour; eight great-grandchildren, Michelle, Nicholas, Derek and Adam Montour, Tiffany Petermeier, and Erik Rocksvold, and Ben and Kayti Montour; two great great grandchildren, Jakob and Daniel Petermeier; two sisters-in-law, Charlotte Wagner and Ethel Wagner of Harpers Ferry; and a number of nieces and nephews; and a host of other relatives and friends.
