Ruby Sylvia Torkelson

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. March 21, 2013 at Norway Lutheran Church, rural St. Olaf, Iowa for Ruby Sylvia (Gunderson) Torkelson, 91 of Elkader, formerly of Farmersburg, who died Monday, March 18, 2013, at the Elkader Care Center following a long illness. Visitation was held from 4 to 7 p.m. March 20 at Norway Lutheran Church, rural St. Olaf and after 9:30 a.m. Thursday at the church. Interment was March 21, 2013 at Norway Lutheran Church, St. Olaf, Iowa.

Ruby Sylvia (Gunderson) Torkelson was born September 7, 1921, on a farm in Wagner Township, Clayton County, Iowa, to Ralph and Alma (Christianson) Gunderson. She was baptized at Norway Lutheran Church October 9, 1921, and confirmed there July 19, 1936, by Rev. S. J. Strandjord. Ruby graduated from Elkader High School in 1939, and taught in rural schools in Clayton and Fayette counties for 5 years.

Quentin and Ruby lived on 3 different farms in Wagner Township before moving to Farmersburg in 1981. They celebrated their Golden Anniversary in 1995. Ruby enjoyed family gatherings, reading, playing Scrabble, lefse-making, listening to music, and sewing, especially quilting for family, the church and Lutheran World Relief. Ruby was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

Survivors include her daughter, Rita Bente of Postville; her two sons, Roger (Geralyn) Torkelson of Elkader and Rodney Torkelson of Farmersburg; 7 grandchildren, Annette (Chad) Davis of Luana, Richard (Heather) Bente of Postville, Anne (Chris) Blaylock of LaCrosse, WI, Gail (Beau) Hendry, U.S. Air Force stationed in England, Travis (Jennifer) Torkelson and Daniel (Tiffany) Torkelson, all of Farmersburg; Andrew (Katie) Torkelson of Lisbon; 9 great-grandchildren, Ashley K. Bente of Iowa City, Kelsi and Myah Davis of Luana, Celia and Harper Blaylock of LaCrosse, WI, Isabella, Quentin and Oliver Torkelson and Veda Torkelson, all of Farmersburg; 3 sisters, Doris Niedert of Waterloo, Betty Holm and Fern Templeton of Waverly; one brother, Dean (Clarion) Gunderson of Postville; sisters-in-law, Kay Gunderson of Postville, Jan Gunderson of Fairbank, Minerva Leonard of Sycamore, IL, Iva (Lee) Klinkenberg of McGregor; plus many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Ruby was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Quentin in 1999; a grandson, Greg Bente; son-in-law, Glen R. Bente; two brothers, Ralph Gunderson and Arnold Gunderson, sister-in-law, Opal Houg, brothers-in-law, Millard Houg, Lloyd Leonard, Bernard Templeton, Lloyd Niedert, Duane Holm; and nephews, Jerry Garcia and Randy Houg.
