Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. February 6, 2013 at Peace United Church of Christ in Elkader, IA for Alvin A. Koehn, 88, of Elkader, who died Sunday, February 3, 2013, at the Elkader Care Center. Visitation was held from 4 to 8 p.m. February 5, at Leonard Funeral Home, Elkader and after 10 a.m. on Wednesday at the Church. Interment was February 6, at East Side Cemetery, Elkader, IA.
Alvin was born on October 15, 1924, in Communia, Iowa, to William Sr. and Rose (Behrens) Koehn. He attended the Communia School through the 8th grade.
Alvin was inducted into the United States Army on February 17, 1945, and was honorably discharged on September 27, 1947. During this time, he served in WW II and attained the rank of Staff Sergeant.
On April 5, 1949, he was united in marriage to Ruby Kurth at the Peace United Church of Christ in Elkader, Iowa by Reverend Paul Kitter. Seven children were born to this union.
Alvin worked for Iowa Terazzo Floor Company in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, until his retirement. He also drove semi for Duane Hoth out of Elkader. He enjoyed selling sweet corn, deer hunting, fishing, mushroom hunting, spending time with family, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, caring for the family’s horses, and doing activities with the Whistlin Bit Saddle Club.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Ruby Koehn; three children, Connie Koehn, Tom Koehn, and Daryl (Lori, special friend) Koehn, all of Elkader; two grandchildren, Stacy (Justin) Fuelling of Monona, and Corey (Sara) Koehn of Elkader; 5 great grandchildren, Diezel, Weston, and Abbigail Fuelling of Monona, and Griffin and Mason Koehn of Elkader; 4 brothers, Bill (Sharon) of Elkader, Muff of Elkader, Ed (Anna Mae) of Mt. Vernon, and Dick (Ruth) of Mt. Vernon; one sister Rose Matuska of LaCrosse, WI, many nieces, nephews and friends.
Alvin was preceded in death by his parents: four infant children; two brothers, Leo Koehn and Ray Koehn and two sisters, Evelyn Clark and Eileen Kuhse.
