Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. September 17, 2012 at St. John Lutheran Church in Dundee, Iowa, for Mildred Bertha Cumberland, 97, of Waverly, Iowa, formerly of Strawberry Point, who passed away at the Bartels Lutheran Retirement Community in Waverly on Wednesday, September 12, 2012. Visitation was held from 2 to 5 p.m. September 16, 2012 at Leonard-Muller Funeral Home in Strawberry Point, Iowa. Friends could call one hour before the service at the church on Monday. Interment was held September 17, 2012 at Floral Hills Memorial Gardens, Oelwein, Iowa.
Mildred Bertha Cumberland was born on April 17, 1915, at home, in rural Putnam Township, Fayette County, the daughter of Frederick and Mary (Handel) Streicher. Mildred attended Lamont School and graduated from Lamont High School in 1933.
On March 21, 1934, Mildred was united in marriage to M. Merle Cumberland in Waterloo. Together they began farming in rural Lamont until 1978 when they moved into Strawberry Point.
Mildred was a 60 year member of LIC – Ladies Industrial Club. She volunteered as a pollster counting votes for the elections in Fayette County for many years. Mildred was a former member of St. Peter Lutheran Church in Lamont until it closed. She currently was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Dundee. Mildred made many quilts over the years with the ladies of St. Peter Lutheran Church. Mildred always had a large garden and did a lot of canning. She was a wonderful cook who was famous for her homemade noodles.
Survivors include 3 children, Linda (Rick) Larsen of Osage, Dennis (Rosemary) Cumberland of Oelwein, and Marvin (Sharon) Cumberland of Strawberry Point; 7 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild; one brother, Ernest Streicher of Lamont; one sister, Alice Conant of Lamont; and many nieces and nephews.
Mildred was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, M. Merle, in 1995; 5 sisters, Annie, Mae, Ruth, Helen and Mabel; and 4 brothers, Raymond, Harry, Alfred and Paul.
