Winifred Jean Schmidt, 91, of McGregor, Iowa, formerly of Strawberry Point, peacefully passed away on Tuesday, August 7, 2012, at the Great River Care Center in McGregor.
Visitation was from 2 to 5 p.m. August 12, 2012 at Leonard-Muller Funeral Home in Strawberry Point, Iowa, with funeral services taking place at 10:30 a.m. August 13, 2012 at Leonard-Muller Funeral Home in Strawberry Point, Iowa, with burial following at Cass Township Cemetery in Strawberry Point, Iowa. Friends could call one hour before the service at the funeral home.
Winifred Jean Schmidt was born on September 3, 1920, near Arlington, the oldest child of Archie and Grace (Fox) Brooks. She lived her entire life in northeast Iowa, graduating in 1938 from Arlington High School. Winifred moved from Arlington to Strawberry Point as a young adult and later married Floyd Schmidt on September 3, 1941, in Bethany, Missouri.
For decades, Winifred and Floyd operated the Schmidt Fruit Stand on the south side of Strawberry Point, and in the off-seasons Winifred worked as a waitress at several restaurants in the area. Her entire life was characterized by her gentleness, generosity, and compassionate support of others, even doing daily volunteer work cheerfully as a resident at Great River Care Center until the last several months.
Surviving are her daughter, Bonnie Ryder of Beeville, TX; son Bruno (Karen) Schmidt of Springfield, MO; and her brother Willis (Darla) Brooks of Bella Vista, AR; 4 grandsons and spouses, Doug (Linda) Ohl of Oceanside, CA, Robert Ohl of Portland, OR, Brian (Kara) Schmidt of Sachse, TX, and Kevin (Tracy) Schmidt of Battlefield, MO; 4 great-grandchildren, Morgan Ohl, and Patrick, Matthew and Xzavier Schmidt; and many nieces and nephews.
Winifred was preceded in death by both her parents; and one brother and sister-in-law, Wayne and Dawn Brooks of McGregor, Iowa.
Her family deeply appreciates the many acts of friendship and kindness she received from others throughout her life, including the caring staff at Great River Care Center, and especially, Cheri Leachman, niece and Administrator. A special thank-you to long-time friend, Mickey Schloss, for her many continued acts of friendship.
