Winifred Jean Schmidt was born on September 3, 1920, near Arlington, the oldest child of Archie and Grace (Fox) Brooks. She lived her entire life in northeast Iowa, graduating in 1938 from Arlington High School. Winifred moved from Arlington to Strawberry Point as a young adult and later married Floyd Schmidt on September 3, 1941, in Bethany, Missouri.

For decades, Winifred and Floyd operated the Schmidt Fruit Stand on the south side of Strawberry Point, and in the off-seasons Winifred worked as a waitress at several restaurants in the area. Her entire life was characterized by her gentleness, generosity, and compassionate support of others, even doing daily volunteer work cheerfully as a resident at Great River Care Center until the last several months.

Winifred was preceded in death by both her parents; and one brother and sister-in-law, Wayne and Dawn Brooks of McGregor, Iowa.

Her family deeply appreciates the many acts of friendship and kindness she received from others throughout her life, including the caring staff at Great River Care Center, and especially, Cheri Leachman, niece and Administrator. A special thank-you to long-time friend, Mickey Schloss, for her many continued acts of friendship.
