William H. Buttolph was born Dec. 25, 1819, in Corinth, Saratoga Co., N.Y., and died at his home in Hardin, Clayton Co., Ia., March 27, 1901, being 81 years, 3 months and 2 days old.
He was married May 16, 1841, to Miss Mary A. Stearnes, to whom four children were born, 3 sons and one daughter. On March 25, 1853 his wife died, leaving her husband with the four small children.
On June 22, 1854, he married Miss Julia L. Allen. With his wife and children he came to Iowa arriving here May 15, 1855, being one of the early settlers of this place.
Nov. 12, 1883, he was called to mourn the loss of his second wife.
When quite young he joined the Baptist church and later the Methodist of which he was a member at the time of his death.
The four children, Mrs. Angeline Strickland, of Latham, Kansas, Cassius H., of Bucklin, Kansas, Loren E. and Zenus J. of Hardin, are left to mourn his loss, besides 18 grand children and several great grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at the M.E. church in Hardin, after which he was laid to rest in Grand Meadow Cemetery, beside his late wife.
