John Henry Leui was born in a log cabin on the home farm in Grand Meadow township, Clayton county, Iowa, February 3rd, 1861, and died at Riceville, Iowa, May 27, 1929, aged 65 years, three months and 24 days.
His entire life, with the exception of four years residence in Postville, was spent on the farm of his birth.
He was baptized and confirmed in the Catholic church. He obtained his education in the home school and also at Upper Iowa University at Fayette.
In 1890 he was united in marriage to Milda M. Sonnkalb, and to this union were born six children - Eva Caroline, who passed away March 8, 1902, at the age of 10 years; Mrs. Walter C. Dittmer of Elkader, Iowa; Homer Charles of Clermont, Iowa; Mrs. Walter H. Hoffbauer of Columbus, Nebraska; Howard William of Ossian, Iowa, and Margaret Milda of Postville, Iowa.
He leaves to mourn his passing, besides his loving wife and five children, one brother, Wiliam Leui of Postville, Iowa; four sisters, Mrs. Mary Kluss of Denton, Texas; Mrs. Elizabeth Sonnkalb of Lamont, Iowa; and the Misses Caroline and Anna Leui of Postville, Iowa. Also two aged uncles, Frank Heirigs of Parkston, South Dakota, and John Heirigs of Scotland, South Dakota; four grandchildren, and other relatives and friends in countless numbers.
Mr. Leui was one of the forward looking and progressive farmers of Clayton county, who took great interest in the dairy end of the farm and built up a herd of choice Hereford cattle that were not only his pride, but admired by dairymen over a considerable scope of country.
His home was his citadel, where he provided well of those things that could bring happiness, contentment and comfort to members of his household, and where he delighted to extend open-handed hospitality to his neighbors and friends.
He was an upright man of sterling integrity and congenial mien, whose friendships were limited only by the circle of his acquaintance, and the best evidence of the character of man that he was is shown by the universal and widespread sorrow at his passing.
The funeral was held from the family home in Grand Meadow township last Friday afternoon at two o'clock, Rev. E.T. Finck, pastor of St. Paul's Lutheran church of this city officiating, and was one of the largest gatherings of its kind ever held in that locality.
Fraternally Mr. Leui was affiliated with Postville Lodge No. 707, I.O.O.F. and Oak Camp No. 328, M.W.A., both of this city.
Interment was made in the family plot in Grand Meadow cemetery.
The following out-of-town relatives and friends were present at the funeral: John Heirigs of Scotland, South Dakota; Frank Heirigs of Parkston, South Dakota; Mrs. Ray Gallagher of Parker, South Dakota; Mrs. Ben Buren of Leland, Iowa; Dr. and Mrs. Edward Corcoran and James Corcoran of Chicago, Illinois; Mr. and Mrs. Bert Sechler of Stanwood, Iowa; Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Brandt of Fort Atkinson, Iowa; Mr. and Mrs. Frank Coon and family and Mrs. Mary Coon of McGregor, Iowa; Mrs. Herman Dittmer of Strawberry Point, Iowa; Mr. and Mrs. Carl Meyer and family and Mrs. J.D. Becker and family of Calmar, Iowa.
