Clayton County Register/Journal, 6 Feb 1902:

Death of Mrs. A. Kramer.
While sitting at the supper table last evening with all her family about here, except her son Henry, absent in California, Mrs. Anton Kramer was suddenly afflicted with a paralytic stroke which rendered her unconscious. Medical assistance was at once summoned and the
unfortunate lady revived enough to recognize her family, but she soon relapsed and then passed away
at about 9:30 p.m. The funeral will be held from St. Joseph’s church at 10:30 o’clock Saturday morning.

Obituary, Mrs. Anton Kramer

Mrs. Anton Kramer, nee Caroline Gerhlein, was born the 15th of October, 1852, at Neu Pfortz,
Bavaria, in Germany, and died at Elkader, Wednesday, February 5th, 1902. At the age of five years she came to this country and made her home with her sister at Cincinnati, Ohio. In May, 1872 she came to Elkader and in October of the same year was united in marriage to Anton Kramer of this place. The husband, a daughter and five sons survive her.

The summons came unexpectedly Wednesday evening while the family were still engaged in social
converse after the evening meal at nine o’clock she died surrounded by the members of the family,
except Henry, a son, who is absent in California and could not be present at the funeral services.
About three years ago the deceased suffered from a stroke of paralysis from which she never fully
recovered. Two shocks followed at intervals of about a year, the third one proving fatal.

In afflictions like the above, death comes as a divine relief and while a belief in the verity of this cannot take from the bereavement a single pang, yet strength is mercifully given sufficient for the day and the lapse of time dries up every tearful eye and heals the wounds of a bleeding heart. In her day the deceased was gentle and kind and the elements so mixed in her that all the world might stand and say—here indeed was a woman. The mother and queen of another household is taken hence. The beauties of her character and goodly precepts will ever be cherished by those who knew her, while the rich fragrance of a gentle memory will linger about the place called home.

The friends of the family and the community at large share in the loss of her untimely taking off, and
extend to the husband and family the kindly sympathy which bereavements like these are wont to
evoke. The funeral services were held at the Catholic church on Saturday last at 10:30 a.m. and the remains were laid to rest in St. Joseph’s cemetery, of this place.

Card of thanks. We wish to extend our heartfelt thanks to friends for their sympathy and kindly
assistance in our late bereavement. A. Kramer and Family.
