Mrs. August Benson died after an illness of about two weeks at her home in Highland township, near Elkader, on Friday evening, June 17, at the age of seventy-four years, seven months and five days.
Mrs. Benson had not been well for several years, but up until two weeks ago she had been up and about her household duties as usual, when an attack of flu brought on the last fatal illness.
Mrs. Benson's maiden name was Sarah Elizabeth Jakobi. She was born in Sweden, November 11, 1857. As a young girl she came to this country and made her home in New York state. Here it was that she was married to August Benson on Nov. 20, 1884. In 1885, she and her husband came to Highland township, Clayton county, Iowa, and a year later they moved onto their present farm, which has been their home up to the time of her death. Here by hard work she and her husband have built a fine home and developed a large and valuable farm.
To them were born five children, namely the three sons, Hon. C.A. Benson, Adolph and Oscar Benson at home, and two daughters, Mrs. Wm. Cheeseman of McGregor, and Mrs. Hilma Erickson, who preceded her mother in death 19 months ago.
Besides the grief stricken husband and the four children, there lives to mourn her death five gradchildren, many nephews and nieces, as well as the entire community where she and her family have for the past forty-seven years been active for all that has been for the good of the community, and because of her kindly christian character she won the love of all who knew her.
She was a member of the Lutheran church, and a charer member of the Highland curch, wherein she was ever a loyal and active partaker in all its activities. The funeral services were held on Monday forenoon, June 20, from the home and from the Highland Lutheran church, with interment in the cemetery adjoining the church. The pastor Rev. G. Gunsten, officiated. The large attendance of friends from far and near, as well as the very extensive floral offerings gave ample testimony of the good will she and her family enjoy among those who realy know them.
The pall bearers were six neighbors, O.H. Larson, Chris Larson, Adolph Larson, Lucien Donlon, Leo Boland and Alfred Cook. The flower girls were Belva Benson, Ruth Christianson, Ruby, Velma and Lucille Larson, Mary Page, Virgil and Burma Cook.
Blessed be the memory of this God loving and noble woman.
