Mrs. B.M. Benson was born Jan. 17, 1863, on a farm in Highland township, Clayton county, Iowa, and died at her home in Elgin May 17, 1929, after a serious illness of one week. She was at the time of her death sixty-six years and four months old.

With the exception of six years spent in Pipestone, Minn., her entire life was spent on the farm until the winter of 1928 when she with the rest of the family moved to Elgin.

She was a daughter of Lars and Jorand Lien. She was one of a family of eleven children. Three brothers and three sisters preceeded her in death.

She was married to B.M. Benson March 8, 1889. To this union eight children were born. One son died at Colorado Springs, in 1924. Those left to mourn the loss of a kind and loving mother are her husband and six daughters and one son. They are, Mrs. O.H. Larson of Elkader, Mrs. Philman Embertson of St. Olaf, Mrs. C.O. Torkelson, Mrs. Wm. Torkelson, Mrs. R. Moellerman, Belva Benson and Melvin Benson, all of Elgin; eight grandchildren and four sisters also survive. The sisters are, Mrs. N.G. Peterson and Mrs. A. Stuveland of Minneapolis, Minn., Mrs. M.T Paulson of Austin, Minn., and Mrs. M.O. Simonstad of Grand Forks, North Dakota.

She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran church and was a member of the Highland Lutheran church in which she was a faithful worker. Funeral services were held at the home in Elgin and at the Highland Lutheran church Tuesday, may 21.

Pall bearers were, Carl Torkelson, Elmer Benson, Albert Larson, Philman Larson, Orvald Larson and Oscar Benson. The flower bearers were, Betty Elkema, Bessie Grimm, Kathleen Steele, Elaine Zurbriggen, Margaret Crider and Lois Lenhart. Relatives from a distance in attendance at the funeral were Mrs. A. Stuveland of Minneapolis, Mrs. M.T. Paulson of Austin, Minn., and C. Moellerman of Lansing, Iowa.

The Golden Gates were opened;
A Gentle voice said "Come!"
And with farewell unspoken
You calmly entered home.
The flowers that lay upon you
May wither and decay,
But our love for you, dear mother
Will never pass away.

~Elgin Echo, May 23, 1929

~Note: the obit of her husband gives her name as Borghild Lien
