Postville Review, Fri., 13 Oct. 1905. (condensed).

On Sunday morning last, Oct. 8th, the M.E. church at Hardin was filled to capacity by a goodly gathering of people from the country roundabout to pay their last tribute of respect to Wm. Brock (or Brockelhurst), who had died at the county farm, near Elkader, the Friday previous from the infirmities incident to age.

Wm. Brock came to Hardin from the state of Ohio in 1865 and with the exception of one or two brief intervals has resided there continuously since, being engaged in the mercantile business in a small way. He conducted a store in Postville for a short time some thirty years ago and kept a little store near Forest Mills postoffice on Yellow River a few years ago. It is also said he was in business at McGregor many years ago. Most of the forty years he lived in this section he ran a little store at Hardin, and during all these years he lived alone in the little rooms over his store, into the privacy of which no other foot than his was ever permitted to tread. Of his life previous to coming there there is absolutely nothing known as he was always evasive when questioned. It is the belief of many that in early life he met with some disappointment or reverse that blotted out forever his happiness and he never made a confidant or close friend thereafter, though he was always kind and courteous to everyone. About ten years ago he found religion and later united with the M.E. church to which he remained loyal to the end.

It is known that he has relatives living somewhere, their location unknown as he never talked of his family. For a number of years he has been in failing mental and physical condition, scarce able to get about. About two weeks ago he went to LaCrosse to the Inter State Fair, and a few days later was found in a demented condition by the authorities who bought him a ticket and sent him to McGregor, where being unable to give any more information than his name he was sent to the Poor Farm where he died after a weeks illness.

Learning of his whereabouts through an item in the McGregor News, Horace Smith and Carey Cayton drove down from Hardin to see him, arriving at the County Farm a few minutes before he passed away from earthly problems. The remains were brought to Hardin the following day, where funeral services were conducted by Rev. Skinner as above stated.

The funeral was a peculiar one in that there were no mourners, no relatives or kin, or even close friend present, for while he made no enimies neither did he form any friendships.

He died possessed of some property, chiefly composed of merchandise from railway salvage sales, and perhaps has some money loaned out, but of this nothing will be known until an administrator is appointed by the court.
