Obituary
James Boots was born in Euhurst, England, February 1, 1845, and died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Samuel Mosby, in Elgin, Iowa, December 9, 1920, at the age of 75 years, 10 months, and 9 days. He was one of a family of twelve children, six sisters and six brothers.

At the age of seven he came to the United States, settling on a farm near Batavia, Illinois.

During the civil war he enlisted in the Union army, serving three years. He took part in the battles of Stone River, Missionary Ridge, Chickamauga, and Lookout Mountain. He was taken prisoner while on the way to Atlanta to join Sherman’s army, and was sent to Andersonville prison where he was kept three months.

On November 24, 1867, at Volga City, Iowa, he was united in marriage to Augusta Park. To this
union seven children were born, of whom four survive him. His wife preceded him in death about
eight years. Mr. Boots lived in Elkader about twenty-five years. He came to Elgin in the spring of 1897. Since the death of his wife, he has made his home with his daughter, Mrs. Samuel Mosby.

He was industrious and home-loving, trying always to live an honest and upright life.

He has been a sufferer from heart trouble for a number of years; the beginning of his last illness dating back about two months.

He was a member of the Boardman Post, G.A.R., and always took a keen interest in matters
pertaining to this organization.

He leaves to mourn his death one brother, Thomas Boots of Stanley, Iowa; one son, Samuel Boots
of Elkader, Iowa; and three daughters, namely Mrs. A. T. Halstenson of Edmonton, Alberta; Mrs.
Samuel Mosby of Elgin, Iowa; and Mrs. A. V. Dibble of Spokane, Washington; also a number of
grand children, and a great many relatives and friends.

Those from out of town that came to attend the funeral were Mrs. A. V. Dibble of Spokane,
Samuel Boots and daughter Marie and sons Ira, Clarence and Raymond of Elkader; Mr. and Mrs.
Thomas Boots of Stanley, Lester Boots of Oelwein, Matthew Boots of Delaware, Mr. and Mrs.
Arthur Boots of Fayette, Mrs. Wm. Crow and Son Everitt and Mrs. Ezra Dibble of Clermont.
