Boy killed by the cars near Monona.
Leader:—A sad and terrible accident happened yesterday on the railroad track, at the crossing as you come into town on the western road. Gustave Johnson, boy about ten years of age, was playing with a number of school mates, when the freight due here at 4:30 or thereabouts, whistled, and young Johnson started on the run telling his mates that he was going to have a ride. A half hour afterwards he was found at the side of the track, one leg and one arm terribly mangled. Assistance was procured and the boy, unconscious, was taken to his home. The leg and arm were amputated by Drs. Renshaw and Brown. Both members were badly and terribly crushed. The little follow’s suffering must have been intense, and his life, hanging upon a thread, slowly ebbed away, until 8 o’clock, the life spark went out.Transcriber’s note: Find a Grave shows he was born Feb. 9, 1888 and died Nov. 4, 1896. He is buried in the Monona Cemetery.
