Postville Graphic, Thur., 22 Dec. 1892.
The startling news was received here Sunday of the death the day before of Gus. Henkes, the well known farmer and stock breeder of Farmersburg, Clayton county. Apoplexy was the cause and his death occurred on a train near Oelwein while returning home from a visit to a daughter in the interior of the state. Mr. Henkes has been a weekly visitor to Postville the past season, and enjoyed the warm friendship of many of our citizens who will deeply mourn his sudden demise.

Elkader Register, Thur., 29 Dec. 1892.
Last week Justus Henkes made a visit to his daughter, Mrs. Hattie Harnock, at Remson, Ia., and Friday Dec. 16th, while returning home boarded a freight train at Waterloo for Oelwein. On the way between the two places he was suddenly seized with sharp and acute pains in the region of the heart and almost instantly expired. His remains were taken to Oelwein, and on Monday evening reached his home in Wagner township. His age was 54 years.
From the Leader we learn that Mr. Henkes was born in Germany. He came to this country and settled in Ohio, when quite young, and about 40 years ago came to this county, residing upon a farm in Wagner township, very near the north line of the township. He was well and favorably known in the county, and as a farmer and stock raiser had become prominent at agricultural meetings and stock shows. He prospered in business affairs, leaving his family in good comfortable circumstances. He was a member of the Farmersburg lodge of the Masonic fraternity, the A.O.U.W. and V.A.S., the two latter being insurance organizations. He was thrice married. By his second wife five children were born and by his third wife, four. Three daughters are married, Mrs. Annie Moon and Mrs. Maggie Spencer, residing in Wagner township, and Mrs. Hattie Harnock, at Ransom, Ia. Besides the nine children there are three children belonging to Mrs. Henkes by her first marriage, one of which, Mrs. Lizzie Harnock, resides also at Ransom, Iowa.
Mr. Henkes was a good citizen, a good man, friend and neighbor. None of us poor mortals are without fault and we presume that Mr. Henkes had his share, but in general terms he was a good citizen, and honest, upright business man. His sudden unexpected taking off was a shock to his numerous friends and acquaintances in this county.
The funeral took place Wednesday Dec. 22nd at one o'clock, under the auspices of the Masonic fraternity, Rev. Gast, of Postville, delivering the sermon in German and Rev. Littler in English. He was buried at the Farmersburg cemetery.
