Funeral services for Marie Schutte were held Tuesday, February 10, 1998, at 11 a.m. in St. Paul Lutheran Church at Postville, Iowa. The Rev. M. M. Marks officiated. Special music was provided by Marie's grandchildren. The Schutte Funeral Service of Postville was in charge of arrangements. Interment was in the Postville Cemetery.
Marie F. Schutte, the daughter of John and Minnie (Dahms) Backhaus, was born October 8, 1905, in Grand Meadow Township, Clayton County, near Luana, Iowa. She passed away at the Good Samaritan Center in Postville on Sunday morning, February 8, 1998. She had reached the age of 92 years and 4 months.
She was baptized November 17, 1905, by the Reverend Paulson in St. John Lutheran Church at Luana, Iowa. She attended the Pixler School near her home and then the Luana High School.
On October 24, 1925, she was married to Elmer Schutte at the home of her parents in Postville. To this union 3 children were born. The couple farmed near Castalia until 1952 when they moved to Postville. Marie became a resident of the Good Samaritan Center in Postville in 1985.
She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Elmer, who died in 1974, 3 sisters, Amanda Johanningmeier, Florence Christofferson and Viola Miller, 3 brothers, Verni Engle, Albert Backhaus, and Arno Backhaus, and a great grandchild, Faith Henkes.
Surviving are her children, Eugene (Lillian) Schutte of Postville, Lloyd (Clarine) Schutte of Castalia, Iowa and Eleanor (Ivan) Torkelson of Elgin, Iowa; 10 grandchildren: Barbara (Nick) Leuschen, Brad (Kathy) Schutte, Brian (LaRae) Schutte, Beth (Daryl) Henkes, Cindy (Harold) Schmale, Mike (Rose) Schutte, LuAnn (Nick) Rolling, Lynette (Bob) Wilson, Bruce (Sue) Torkelson and Dirk (Cindy) Torkelson; and 23 great grandchildren.
Also surviving are 5 sisters-in-law: Esther Schutte, Amanda Schutte, Marie Miene, Velma Block and Hazel Backhaus; and a brother-in-law, Otto Miene.
Marie was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Postville and an Honor Roll member of the WELCA. She enjoyed the outdoors and working in her flower garden. Marie loved to fish and several times took the grandchildren fishing in local creeks. She also enjoyed quilting and made quilts for all of the grandchildren. Marie did other handiwork such as tatting, crocheting and making braided rugs. Visiting with her friends was also an important part of her life.
Casket bearers were Michael, Bradley and Brian Schutte, Bruce and Dirk Torkelson, Daryl Henkes, Robert Wilson, Nick Rolling, Harold Schmale and Nick Leuschen.
