Aaron Berns Dies In Car Accident

A rural Hawkeye man, described as the heart and soul of the Northeast Missouri State University wrestling squad, was killed in an automobile accident early Friday.

Aaron Berns, 21, son of Gregory and Linda Berns of rural Hawkeye, and grandson of Larry Berns, Elkader and the late Margueriete Berns, was killed about 3:40 a.m. Friday when he apparently fell asleep at the wheel of his car while traveling from the Kirksville school to Jefferson, Mo. He had taken his last final exam of the semester Thursday.

Berns' car struck an oncoming goose-neck trailer being pulled by a one-ton truck, and he was killed instantly, authorities said. The accident happened on Highway 63 just north of Columbia, Mo.

Berns was well known throughout northeast Iowa while he wrestled at North Fayette School, West Union.

The funeral was Tuesday, May 12, in West Union, with burial at St. Joseph Cemetery, Elkader.
