Postville Review, Fri., 13 June 1913. Condensed from a longer obit.

This community was greatly shocked when the news flashed over the wires Wednesday night that Verne Brewer was dead. Although many knew he had gone for an operation, accompanied by his aunt, M. Pixler, few thought how soon and sad his homecoming would be, and how much it would mean to his relatives and friends.

Verne Elmer Brewer, the eldest son of Alonzo and Emma Brewer, was born in Lehigh, Webster Co., Iowa, July 1888. When but four years old, is mother having died, he came to the home of his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. James Pixler, in Grand Meadow township, Clayton Co., where he remained until five days previous to his death, when he was taken to a Dubuque, Iowa, hospital for an operation for appendicitis, at which place he passed away Wednesday, May 28th, aged 24 years, 10 months and 25 days, death being caused by a blood clot entering the auricle of the heart.

He is survived by his father, who resides at Sagauchee, Colorado, and his brother, Harold, living near Verne's home.

Funeral services were held at the M.E. church, where a large concourse of friends gathered to pay their last respects.

Those from a distance attending the services were: Mrs. Margaret Brown-Miller and Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Larkin of Cherokee, Iowa; and Mr. and Mrs. Phillip Cooney of Lawler, Iowa.
