David M. Jemison 1868-1950
RITES HELD FOR FORMER RESIDENTFuneral services were held Friday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. at the Schutte Funeral Home for David M. Jemison, 82, former resident of this community, with Rev. Frederick R. Ludwig officiating. Burial was in Minert cemetery northeast of Postville.
Mr. Jemison passed away last Tuesday at the Atlantic Memorial Hospital in Atlantic, where he had been a patient for the past five days.
Born At Postville
Mr. Jemison was born at Postville on January 29, 1868 and died August 8, 1950. He was the son of David Marion and Sarah Burge Jemison, pioneer settlers of Allamakee county, who emigrated from Green county, Pennsylvania in 1850. He was the youngest of nine children, seven sisters and one brother.
He attended West Grove School and graduated from Upper Iowa University. On March 5, 1890 he was united in marriage to Emily Josephine Brownell of Waukon. Two children, Cecil Brownell and Thelma Marion, were born to this marriage.
During his married life he made his home in Iowa, Illinois and Oklahoma. For the past 18 years he had been a resident of Atlantic. He was preceded in death by his wife on March 9, 1906 and his daughter, Cecil, on April 12, 1906.
Surviving are his daughter, Mrs. Thelma M. Sonnkalb of Postville, one grandson, Colonel Charles D. Sonnkalb of Washington, D. C., one granddaughter, Miss Marion E. Sonnkalb of Cedar Rapids, and two great grandsons, Charles David and Scott B. Sonnkalb.
David Jemison's daughter Thelma married Paul L. Sonnkalb, who was born in Grand Meadow township, Clayton County, Iowa.
