Herbert Clarence Brownson
Funeral services were held for Herbert C. Brownson on Mon., March 12 at 1:30 p.m. in St. Paul Lutheran Church in Monona with Pastor R. E. Langholz officiating. Pallbearers were LeRoy Fuelling, Carl Fuelling, Robert Saacke, Farley Henkes, Donald Moon, Vernice Moon, Jerome Wille and Marvin Rodas. Burial was in the New Monona City Cemetery. Mr. Brownson passed away March 9 at the age of 89 years, 1 month and 4 days.
Herbert Clarence Brownson, the son of Freeman and Rachael (Datisman) Brownson, was born Feb. 5, 1884 on a farm near National. He grew up on the farm, attended public school at National and the McGregor High School. He worked on the home farm until 1918.
On Jan. 22, 1918, he was married to Emma Mary Aulerich at the Aulerich farm at Bismark, Iowa by the Rev. W. C. Drahn. They began farming in Wagner Township on a farm known as the Justice Henkes farm.
He was baptized by the Rev. Albert Daugs on May 16, 1920 and was a member of St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church in Monona ever since. He taught Sunday School in the twenties and was an officer of the Church Council several different times. At the time the church building was enlarged in 1934, he served on the Building Committee. He had been an active member of the Brotherhood.
Mr. Brownson also served his community as a member of the Wagner School Board for over 12 years. He also served on the Wagner Township Election Board for 30 years and also was chairman of the Clayton County Fair Board.
He and his wife retired to Monona in 1954. They lived in Monona until 1965. Because of ill health, it was necessary for them to live with their son, Palmer and his wife, Betty. Mrs. Brownson died in March of 1966.
Surviving are his son, Palmer (Betty) Brownson of Farmersburg; one brother, Lloyd Brownson of Monona; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Emma, a half-brother, Dr. J. P. Brownson and infant twins; 3 brothers, Bert, Frank and Reuben; 3 sisters, Mrs. Henry (Lois) Buckman, Lucy and Una.
