Hattie Viola Briar
Funeral services for Mrs. Joseph (Hattie Viola) Briar, 98, were held Monday afternoon, April 12, at 1:30 p.m. at the Schultz Funeral home in Monona, with Rev. Donald Jones officiating. Burial was in the Monona City Cemetery.
Mrs. Briar died Tuesday, April 6, 1965, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Clarence Tucker, at Santa Monica, Calif., after a very short illness.
She was born the daughter of Reuben L. and Martha (Fry) Frink, March 12, 1867, at Rossville.
She was united in marriage to Joseph A. Briar, Oct. 5, 1893. To this union 2 children were born: Cecil of Monona, and Mrs. Clarence (Florence) Tucker, of Santa Monica, Calif. They adopted one daughter, Mrs. William (Marguerite) Ryan, when she was only a few weeks old.
Mr. and Mrs. Briar moved to Monona in 1900 and became active members in the Pilgrim Ev. Church. She was also a member of the Woman's Relief corps.
After her husband's death in Nov. 1921, she continued to live in Monona until 1936, when she went to make her home with her daughter, Mrs. William (Marguerite) Ryan, at Manly, Iowa. For the last year and a half she made her home in Santa Monica, Calif., with her daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Clarence (Florence) Tucker.
Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband; 7 brothers and sisters, and one grandchild.
Besides her 3 children she is survived by 14 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Fred Hass, Ray Rush, Herb Wagner, Herb Schlitter, Robert Ferguson and Clarence Tucker.
