Mrs. Cecil A. Briar Funeral Services
Funeral services for Mrs. Cecil A. Briar, 69, were held Wednesday afternoon, July 14, at 2 p.m. in the Monona Methodist church with Rev. Paul V. Clements officiating.
The body lay in state at the church from 1 p.m. until the time of the services. Burial was in the I.O.O.F. cemetery.
Mrs. Briar died Saturday morning, July 10, 1965, at 12:25 a.m. at the McGregor hospital, where she was taken the previous day. She had been in failing health for the last 2 years.
As Lura, she was born the daughter of William and Anna (Carmichael) Ewing at Volga in Highland township, Sept. 5, 1895. She was a graduate of Volga High school and attended State College of Iowa at Cedar Falls.
She was married to Cecil A. Briar Oct. 15, 1919, at Volga, making their home in Monona, where they have lived ever since.
She was a member of the Monona Methodist church, American Legion auxiliary, Northern Clayton County Garden club, Monona Woman's club, and Woman's Society of Christian Service of the Methodist church.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by 2 daughters, Mrs. H. L. (Betty) Kimball of Grundy Center and Mrs. Gordon (Doris) Marvin of Sacramento, Calif.; 2 sons, Roger and Richard of Yosemite, Calif.; a sister, Mrs. E. G. (Cecile) Baumgartner of Volga City; and 4 grandchildren.
Preceding her in death were her parents and a son, Robert.
Pallbearers were Ervin and Norman Baumgartner, Bill and Harvey Kimball, Selmer Hellen, and Clifford Brandt.
Among those from out of town present for the funeral services were Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Marvin and daughter, Nancy, of Sacramento, Calif.; Richard Briar of Yosemite, Calif.; Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Kimball and sons of Grundy Center; Mr. and Mrs. E. G. Baumgartner and Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Probert and sister-in-law of Volga City; Mrs. William Ryan of Manly; Mr. and Mrs. Ray Rush and daughters of Rossville; and Mrs. Nellie Phelps of Strawberry Point.
