Anton Cassutt

Anton Cassutt, nearly seventy-three years of age and for more than thirty years a resident of Elkader, says the Elkader Register, took his own life late Sunday afternoon, when he shot himself in the left temple with a 32 caliber revolver.

Anton Cassutt, nearly seventy-three years of age and for more than thirty years a resident of Elkader, took his own life late Sunday afternoon when he shot himself in the left temple with a 32 caliber revolver.

Mr. Cassutt had been ailing for many years and was seriously ill last April. During the summer, however, he rallied but last Friday was again confined to his bed. Many times recently he had expressed the desire that he might die, but neighbors who had assisted in taking care of him - for he lived alone - never thought that he might take the course of self-destruction.

James Donohue, next door neighbor, had been in the Cassutt home shortly before the deceased fired the fatal shot. Both Mr. Donohue and his sister had heard the shot but at the time thought nothing of it. When found by the former, Mr. Cassutt still showed signs of life but he passed away about thirty minutes after the shot had been fired.

Deceased is survived by one son and also one brother.

Funeral services were held Wednesday morning from St. Joseph's church and interment was made in St. Joseph's cemetery, with Rev. J.P. Taken officiating.
